The Asteroid No.4 is an American psych-rock and shoegaze band now based in the San Francisco, after moving from Philadelphia in 2011. Formed in the late 90s, the group has earned a loyal underground following through immersive live shows characterized by layered guitars and heavy reverb. They boast a prolific discography, including 13 studio albums alongside numerous EPs and singles. Their signature sound blends shoegaze, 12-string folk-rock, Kosmische Musik, and cosmic country. The band was founded by childhood friends Scott Vitt and Eric Harms, who previously played in punk and Smiths tribute acts. Inspired by 90s British shoegaze, they recruited bassist Gregg Weiss and drummer Bill Reim to complete the original lineup, debuting with a self-released 7-inch single on their own Lounge Records label.The name "The Asteroid No.4" honors Vesta (the solar system's brightest asteroid) and the UK psych band Spacemen 3. Notably, their cover of Spacemen 3's "Losing Touch with My Mind" on a 1998 tribute album was publicly praised by founding member Sonic Boom in Magnet Magazine. Acid Rooster blends German krautrock and psych-rock with cosmic jams. The childhood trio crafts instrumental music that shifts between ambient spheres and heavy, climactic riffs. Their partly written, partly improvised tracks create a trance-like undertow, blending space rock, drone, and garage. Authentic and stylistically confident, they offer a fresh, unpretentious take on psychedelic heritage.
