In Peru, it gave name to an equally spicy musical genre which blew up in the 1980s; lyrics about love, sorrow and migrant struggles blend with catchy folk melodies refracted through psychedelic guitars and vintage cumbia grooves to create an infectious sound that’s now having a global revival – alongside a provocative visual language featuring playful typography and unmissable party posters with dazzling neon designs.
