October 11. Thanksgiving weekend. No work Monday. For this instalment, Colin Benders makes his Toronto debut, bringing his full modular system to FORMAT. Everything happens live. Every kick, bassline and transition created in the room. His lockdown streams produced over a thousand hours of recordings, Floaty Things and the five-part album Rigmarole. In his own words, “if I don’t release anything, I’m free to do everything.” Henning Baer co-founded Grounded Theory in 2009. The party grew into one of the city’s most respected techno institutions, with Baer behind the decks as its resident. His records have appeared on Sonic Groove, Nonplus and K209. In 2016, he launched MANHIGH. More than fifteen years of Berlin techno, record collecting and razor-sharp mixing arriving behind the decks. Toronto favourite Measure Divide started FORMAT when techno was nothing but a footnote in the city. More than a decade later, the series has played a foundational role in building a community and culture that has put the city on the radar globally. His own path has led to Berghain, Tresor, K41 and Under Club, with releases on Clergy, Mutual Rytm and, most recently, Air Texture. The newest name on the lineup is Geneva. Embedded in the GTA underground, she runs Hamilton-based TREMA and draws from early techno, electro and Detroit club music. Her work extends beyond the booth through the parties she organizes and her advocacy for safer dance floors. Four artists with Four projects built around the music.
