Maxine Funke is one of Aotearoa New Zealand's most singular and internationally celebrated experimental artists. Working primarily with voice, guitar, electronics, and field recordings, her practice occupies a liminal space between song, improvisation, and sound art — intimate in scale yet expansive in reach. Her recordings have been released on some of the most respected imprints in contemporary experimental music .Her work is received as a vital contribution to the global free-improvisation and experimental song tradition. Clayton Noone is among the most prolific and versatile experimental musicians working in Aotearoa today — and one of the least recognised locally relative to his standing abroad. He has led or co-led a remarkable range of projects across improvised music, post-punk, noise, and avant-garde composition, including The Futurians, CJA, the Strange Girls, Space Wolf 2, Wolfskull and Claypipe, alongside a substantial body of solo work and international collaborations. His recordings circulate widely in specialist experimental and improvised music circles in Europe, North America, and Japan, and he is regularly cited by international peers as a key figure in the Aotearoa experimental tradition. Turner Williams Jr. plays the shahi baaja, an electrified chordophone from the zither family that uses typewriter keys to alter the pitches of its strings. Invented in Japan, evolved in India, and sold secondhand in Alabama, this instrument is a transcultural mutation, merging Asian, European, and American roots with modern mechanical interventions. Turner shreds and tangles these roots with a raw, embodied practice that entwines the physical and narrative through improvisation. His work refracts hybridity through an unhinged and intuitive practice, haptic and cybernetic as it is hectic and syncretic.
