SEPTEMBER 12 | Disco Not Disco with IUEKE The French DJ and producer Iueke, real name Gwen Jamois, was one of the very first people to book Aphex Twin (Richard D. James) for a gig, after moving to London in the early 1990s. According to historical interviews with Resident Advisor, Gwen Jamois developed a heavy record-collecting habit in the early 1990s and began DJing at South London squat parties. It was through this tight-knit underground rave network that he met Luke Vibert, Mixmaster Morris, and a very young Aphex Twin—whom Jamois promptly invited to DJ. They became close creative affiliates. In fact, Iueke originally recorded a series of hardware techno tracks in the winter of 1991/1992. He almost gave them to Richard D. James to release on his iconic label, Rephlex Records, but ultimately decided against it because he felt his tracks were "too 4/4" for the label's experimental style. Those tracks sat on a dusty cassette tape for two decades before being finally released in 2012 as Tapes on the Parisian label Antinote Recordings. Now that we're past this selling point, let's clear something up. This copywriter-slash-DJ says IUEKE is the best DJ on the planet. And we're not talking your pussy flow-chasing all-filler beatmatching celebrities wanking over their wax collection they don't know how to use.
