He has worked widely in the free improvisation, jazz, folk, extreme metal, and popular music worlds. He is an in-demand collaborator both in Chicago and internationally, and he leads numerous bands ranging from highly composed indie-prog/art rock of Lean Years, the IDM/psych trio Pixilated Cryptids, to the fully improvised extreme metal of Abhorrent Expanse, who’s last album “Enter the Misanthropocene” was #16 on the Wire’s best of 2025 list.
