South Central's own Def Sound invites you to celebrate the release of their first official mixtape at the legendary dublab headquarters. In an era when everything feels like an ad or AI, the mixtape is an act of active resistance to the exploitation perpetuated by the current streaming service model. R4NWRB is the first volume in a series of Post-Gangsta Political Mixtapes. Born out of a weekly writing group with MCs Topaz Jones, MoRuf, TOBi, and Dijon (Samo), the work created a space to process through rotating prompts. This act of co-creation allowed Def to tap into the essence of practice over product. R4NWRB Vol.1 is a Sonic collage that exists as both a syllabus and sonic flyer for THE BLACK ARTS RADICAL STUDIO (BARS). We will spend the evening listening to the mixtape, followed by a Q&A with the polymathic educator and Rap game's Neil deGrasse Tyson and Jason E.C. Wright, and conclude with a book swap. Bring a book to get a book!
