Alongside Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson, May formed the legendary Belleville Three — the Detroit pioneers whose ideas helped change the course of electronic music. His recordings as Rhythim Is Rhythim, including “Strings of Life” and “It Is What It Is”, gave that new sound an unmistakable emotional force, reaching dancefloors far beyond the city where it began. Through Transmat, he helped shape the next generation, releasing music from artists including Carl Craig, Stacey Pullen and Kenny Larkin. His influence runs through decades of club culture.
