Los Angeles Filmforum and the UCI Third Cinema Now Collective present *A Night of Knowing Nothing*, by Payal Kapadia. (Its LA premiere was also at 2220 Arts in February of 2022.) In her debut film, Payal Kapadia deftly merges reality with fiction, weaving together archival footage with student protest videos to tell the story of L, a student at the Film and Television Institute of India, writing to her estranged lover while he is away. Gradually we’re immersed in the drastic changes taking place at the school and in the lives of young people across the country. *A Night of Knowing Nothing* is a vital tapestry of the personal and the political, an essential document of contemporary India and a nostalgic look at youth fighting the injustice of their time. ~ Co-presented by the UCI Third Cinema Now Collective, a collaboration between Prashanth Kamalakanthan, Margaux Fitoussi, and Felix Jean-Louis of the University of California, Irvine. The film series highlights the work of filmmakers from across the Global South and creates a forum for genuine encounters between the UC Irvine community, greater Los Angeles, and filmmakers from around the world. Each screening contextualizes regional cinematic voices and facilitates an extended talkback discussion, centering regional voices as they speak back to American audiences at this pivotal historical juncture. “The best film of the year.” -Michael Phillips, The Chicago Tribune “Foregrounds cinema itself as a site of resistance.” -Michael Sicinski, MUBI Notebook *We believe that this is the third screening of this beautiful film in Los Angeles.*
