Governors Island, New York

To close out the dynamic 2026 Governors Island Arts’ season, themed around movement, Bebop Porú, a free dance party featuring global sounds, will pop up outdoors as a celebration of a summer brimming with art on the Island. BeBop Porú is the musical synthesis of Black American dance music fused alongside rhythms from Africa, The Caribbean, and South America. The free public dance party comes from two of the three creators of Public Service. With sound powered by the signature hot-pink speakers of Karlala Soundsystem, Mickey Pérez, a Brooklyn-based DJ, brings a unique combination of rhythms to the dance floor. Joined by DJ L3Ni of Soul in the Horn, this all-day party celebrates diasporic sounds and brings communities together against Governors Island's picturesque backdrop of the New York skyline. *** Mickey Pérez is a Chicago-born and Miami-raised first-generation American of Cuban and Ecuadorian descent who’s been synthesizing African, Caribbean, South American, and Black American rhythms to New York City dance floors since 2008. A Brooklyn resident since 2002, Mickey represents and presents a non-commercial, diasporic sound irrespective of national borders spanning many different rhythms & genres of dance music across those aforementioned regions of the world. Karlala Soundsystem is a Brooklyn based rig known for clarity, punch, and a signature hot pink aesthetic. We support block parties, live shows, club nights, and cultural gatherings with scalable systems and experienced engineers. L3Ni is a DJ, producer, mastering engineer, and the general manager of Soul in the Horn. Based in Brooklyn, she has worked as a mastering engineer at Aerial Sound Mastering Studios, production manager at Chelsea Music Hall, and is an accomplished classically trained pianist.
