Cactus Lee is the project of Austin songwriter Kevin Dehan — a musician operating at his own pace, on his own terms, in one of American music's richest traditions. Steeped in the classic sounds of Texas country and folk, Dehan draws on a lineage that runs from Townes Van Zandt and Gene Clark to John Prine and Tom T. Hall, filtering those influences through a sensibility that is entirely his own: childlike and dreamy, sharply witty, and quietly profound. Since 2019, Cactus Lee has released with a relentless and rare creative momentum — six albums, two EPs, and a live record, self-written and self-recorded on a four-track before being brought to life with rotating Austin musicians. It is the output of a songwriter who writes because he has to, not because the industry demands it. His latest album Lee's Dream, released in 2026 on Western Vinyl, is his most fully realised work yet — communal, lived-in, joyous and melancholy in equal measure. Conceived on a month-long solo tour and recorded with producer Billy Horton, it is an album steeped in Texas mythology: Lone Star beer, the Armadillo World Headquarters, the wide open roads between one small town and the next. Dehan writes like a historian and a dreamer simultaneously, crafting melodic fever dreams that feel instantly familiar. In a music landscape obsessed with novelty, Cactus Lee is something rarer — an artist building a body of work that will only deepen with time.
