Long Play: Dubstep

2026-11-24
19:00:00 - 22:00:00
Rhythm, Toronto

Led by DIY event organizers and local DJs, Sigil and Hemlock, this edition of Long Play is focused on the history of dubstep in the first decade of the 2000s. It’s roots in UKG, dub, and jungle. Part 1, led and mixed by Sigil, will focus on the proto-dubstep sound and how it developed into dubstep. Part 2, led and mixed by Hemlock, will be dedicated to dubstep proper. Join us as we listen to the seismic impact of dubstep. Dark rooms, Red Stripe, copious amounts of weed, and titanic basswaves pounding against your chest. Picture yourself in London, 2004, at one of the early FWD>> parties. For years, you and your friends have been coming here to get stoned and have your minds blown. It's a small scene, and you only know of a handful of other parties playing this kind of music. What you don't expect is that, just a few years later, dubstep will have gone global, topping charts around the world by 2009. This is the story of that sound: how it began, how it evolved, and how it mutated as it made its way into the mainstream. Sigil is a Toronto-based DJ with a longstanding interest in sound system culture, the UK hardcore continuum, and a range of music beyond the dancefloor. His selections are rooted in the sound and atmosphere of early UK dubstep, defined by labels like DMZ, Tempa, Deep Medi Musik, and Keysound Recordings. Sigil is the host of Subdue on Another Setting Radio and a monthly contributor to Gunners Radio. Hemlock is a resident DJ and organizer for Toronto-based collectives Notabbq and Lucid. An avid student of the post-dubstep wave emerging from the UK in the late 2000s, Hemlock weaves together house, techno, and dubstep to make for eclectic and unpredictable sets. Having supported Dave Huismans, Stones Taro, and Shai FM in the past year alone, Hemlock continues to push genre-defying sounds in Toronto. He runs 'Breathing Space', his karmic outlet for having too many ideas in his head, on Another Setting Radio. To create that experience for everyone, we ask that all guests respect a few simple guidelines: Playback begins at 7:15 PM sharp. Please arrive on time and get settled before the music starts. No late entry or ins-and-outs during playback. Doors close at 8 PM, with a 15-minute intermission between albums to stretch, step outside, or catch up with friends. Phones away, please. We ask that you refrain from using your phone during playback to keep distractions to a minimum. Respect the listening experience. Please save conversations for the intermission or after the session. Even quiet conversations can be distracting to those around you. Respect the space and each other. We want everyone to feel comfortable and welcome. Guests who disrupt the experience or disregard these guidelines may be asked to leave.
