This P0RTAL session opens the doors to deep, cavernous sounds and mind altering explorations of a highly skilled sound system manipulator, instigator of the Dubstep movement on Berlin’s club scene and overall bass music afficionado - Darwin. Joining her will be some of New England’s finest sonic explorers, Terraphorm, Xen Chron and Audiofields. Darwin operates in the realm of low-end frequencies, delivering a tripped-out, sub-rattling blend of styles firmly rooted in sound system culture. Her sets move with swampy intensity and hypnotic flow, drawing dancers in while maintaining a quiet versatility. A seasoned crate digger across many genres, she’s as comfortable playing back-to-back with DJ Storm, Mala or Lena Willikens as she is closing out Bassiani or Berghain’s Klubnacht. Born in Canada, Darwin found her way into dance music after moving to London—first working at fabric in the mid-2000s, then experiencing a bass eureka moment years later at a Swamp81 party. That defining night set the course for her next chapter in Berlin, where she founded her label SPE:C in 2015 to spotlight emerging global talents like Decka, Carré, Axle, Beatrice M., and Tano. In 2016, she launched REEF at the now-defunct Griessmuehle, a club where she had started a monthly techno-focused DJ residency 2 years earlier that helped develop her signature stripped back, sci-fi-infused sound. The boundary-pushing party brought bass music’s alien energy into the heart of the techno capital, which now calls Berghain home. 2024 marked a new chapter in Darwin’s evolution with the launch of ABYSS, a Sunday evening soundsystem series centered on the restorative power of low-end frequencies. Blending transcendental dance music with breathwork, meditation and healing practices, the event creates a space where sound connects body and mind. ABYSS has also teamed up with Wuppertal’s acclaimed Open Ground club for an extended weekend takeover, with plans to expand the concept to other cities in the future. Terraphorm’s DJ sets are the against the grain style which weaves swamp psychedelia, urban vibes and deep bass resonance. Gaining inspiration from the sub frequencies which can be felt more than they can be heard, Terraphorm chooses to present only the deepest and most serious tunes for true bass heads to feast upon. Searching deep into vinyl and internet archives for those golden gems, his track selections leave nothing to the imagination, giving every set full attention and dedication. XEN CHRON is a longtime producer and DJ mostly from Boston, working in the grey area between techno, UK bass, breakbeat, drumʼnʼbass, IDM, acid, and electro. As a DJ, he has opened for UK techno legend REGIS, UK dnb legend PHOTEK, Piezo, Barker, Pictureplane, Mor Elian, JK FLESH, and other peers in the US. He has appeared on Rinse FM, as well as 1020 Radio, Jungletrain, and Bleep Radio. His DJ sets are versatile to fit the spirit of the event ranging from wonky bouncy techno, to experimental club and UK bass, to psychedelic hard techno and deep jungle/dʼnʼb. Sean Gryesten Fields, known as Audiofields, emerged from Copenhagen’s 2010s sound system culture and has been a vital force in the Northeast US dance music scene since 2018, cutting his teeth through New York City’s Dub-Stuy, Konkrete Jungle, and Bassdrive Radio before establishing himself in Providence, Rhode Island. His sound is defined by cavernous bass pressure and mutating rhythms, straddling frenetic, sensual and meditative energies. Audiofields treats music as a medium for catharsis and storytelling, crafting holistic experiences for local communities while pushing outward to share his distinctive style with the world. He is also a P0RTAL resident. BE ADVISED: P0RTAL is a thoughtfully curated space built around music, connection, and community.
