Rubinstein is one of the great forces in modern acid techno, an artist whose joyous élan is matched only by her fearsome power. Rubinstein was born a raver, and came to the DJ booth via the dance floor. It shows in every selection she makes; a Rubinstein set is all killer, no filler, with each selection carefully selected to give the dancers exactly what they need. The Advent is one of the key architects of techno, an artist whose discography goes back to the golden age. There are simply too many great tracks to choose from, and each EP from his 30+ year discography is a testament to an uncompromising ethos. From early, timeless masterpieces like “Elements of Life” or more recent excursions, The Advent never fails to deliver. 98dots returns to the room. The Georgian artist is the person behind the Rapture Investigation radio show, where he lays out his unique vision of techno: immersive, psychedelic, thundering and expertly interwoven with other genres. fka.m4a is back in STUDIO to do what only they can. Favored by dancers, fka.m4a’s joyous, unrestrained embrace of rave classics, trance anthems, house bombs and vocal flips hits with perfectly attuned impact. “The primary message of my music is about love and conveying emotion, and bringing that together in a room,” they once said. “There's so much in electronic music that I feel lacks soul. People are afraid to be vulnerable, but that’s one of the biggest reasons why I do what I do – to show that vulnerability.” Lauren Flax drops in for a session of rugged, acid-laced house. Rooted in classic, jacking sounds, Flax breathes new life into well-established tropes, using pared back structures with a minimum of elements to maximum effect. Her remix of Scotia’s “More Work” from earlier this year is a perfect example. A nasty earworm 303 line, thundering toms and the occasional clipped vocal sample are all she needs to raise the temperature to a fever pitch. Buenos Aires-born, Vienna-based Rumi de Baires appears for the first time. The co-founder of the Gaze party series, de Baires has been a driving force in his city’s queer scene for years.
