AETHER CLOSING PT.2: THE LAST OF RAW

THE AETHER REPORT On the termination of the experiment — Budapest, September 2026. For eleven years now, a peculiar experiment has been taking place beneath the streets of Budapest. Its origins are shrouded in obscurity. What began as a simple inquiry into the nature of sound, light, and human presence soon became a phenomenon far more difficult to explain. Night after night, the chamber filled. Thousands crossed its threshold. Musicians, scholars, dreamers, chemists, workers, strangers, and individuals whose precise classification was beyond even the records of their time. We summoned hundreds of deranged inventors from all corners of the planet to operate the strange apparatus assembled within the chamber. The results were extraordinary. At a certain hour of the night, when the number of those present reached the required density and the instruments were tuned to the proper frequency, something changed. Time became immeasurable. Strangers became familiar. The walls began to breathe. And space ceased to exist. For several hours, it seemed as though the familiar laws governing human behaviour had lost their authority. We named this phenomenon Aether. For eleven years we operated the apparatus. We repaired the instruments. We guarded the entrance. We maintained the ritual. And, as far as we were able, we resisted those demands that sought to alter the very nature of the experiment. With the passing of time, however, certain interests gradually gained greater influence over the operation of the chamber. Yield became more important than the experiment itself. The chamber could no longer have remained what we had built it to be. At that point, a decision had to be made. We refused. Therefore, in its present form, the experiment will come to an end on the final weekend of September. On these two nights, we will activate the apparatus for the final time. The instruments will be brought to full power. The chamber doors will be opened. And we will allow the Aether to operate freely, one last time. We do not know what will happen afterwards. Perhaps the experiment will end. Perhaps it will merely move elsewhere. And it is also possible that we have been mistaken all along — that we were never the ones operating the machine. Perhaps the machine was operating us. There is one thing, however, of which we are certain. The Aether is not merely made of walls, wires, lights, and speakers. The Aether is made of those who crossed through this door. Those who played. Those who worked. Those who built it. Those who stayed until dawn. And those who descended the stairs even once, without knowing exactly what they were looking for. We thank you. The chamber may close. The machine may be dismantled. The experiment may be terminated. But phenomena such as these are rarely destroyed entirely. They merely enter a dormant state. Should the conditions once again become favourable, perhaps the instruments will begin to operate again.
