October begins with a very special night, highlighting thrilling crosscurrents in bass-weighted techno. First things first, Zenker Brothers make their BASEMENT debut. The duo of Dario and Marco Zenker have steadily become one of the most beloved and influential units in modern electronic music. Active since the mid ‘00s, they have distinguished themselves in equal measure as producers, DJs and of course as the founders of Ilian Tape, their revered label. Their signature sound mixes rolling techno, broken beat, spacious dub and trace elements of hip hop with an intuitive clarity that is breathtaking. It’s safe to say that our modern, genre-agnostic underground owes them a significant debt of gratitude; they paved the way for countless artists who followed. Marcel Dettmann said it well in 2015, and it remains the case today: “If I want to change the pace of a set, or interrupt a steady flow of straight, pounding techno without losing the groove, the Zenker Brothers are my weapon of choice.” They’re joined by Hessle Audio co-founder Pangaea. What can we say? Pangaea’s output and label curation have been game-changing. He helped to lead the charge out of dubstep and into a late ‘00s techno-bass hybrid sound that remains essential listening to this day. Pangaea’s earliest tracks bridged dubstep’s dank moodiness with a sleek, pantherine menace that nodded towards Detroit and Berlin without sacrificing the staunch bassweight that was London’s calling card. But by the time the ‘10s were coming to a close, he had evolved into a true wildcard, mashing up bright, chopped up synths, twisted vocal samples, snappy, in-your-face breaks and more. In his hands, no genre is safe, and recent years have seen him making his biggest, boldest tunes to date. London’s re:ni also steps into the booth for the first time. One of the best names in the modern bass-techno underground, re:ni’s productions are exquisitely rendered exercises in taut restraint and thundering power. She’s one half of the Re:Lax label, itself an exciting hub for freaky dancefloor mutations, and has released standout EPs on Timedance and, of course, Ilian Tape. The Carry Nation headlines STUDIO. We’ll say it; they are one of the great house music b2bs of any era. Over their nearly two decades of collaboration, the duo of Will Automagic and Nita Aviance have honed a telepathic communication that folds together the full history of the genre. Some people play house, some people live it. The Carry Nation embodies the liberation and pure joy that make house music eternal. They’re joined by Analog Soul. The long-running collaboration between DatKat and Jacky Sommer brings a dose of pure realness to every set. Steeped in NY’s dance music culture for over two decades, Analog Soul are artists who both represent their own vision while also carrying the torch. They bring with them a craft and sensibility that was forged in a golden age, while also evolving with the times as fluidly as anyone. Alexis De La Rosa completes the lineup.
