ALL NIGHT LONG: SHADEDA Together with Theo Ward, Shadeda runs Elody, a DIY soundsystem party with growing notoriety and a refreshingly open music policy. With only ‘music for dancing’ as the descriptor, headliner-free, long-form sets are a given, and have become formative in Shadeda’s all-night preference when DJing. For Shadeda, DJing is as much a love for and interest in people, as in music. It’s indulging in sharing great timeless sounds that he loves, but also trying to understand the lens through which they’re heard, perceived, and felt. Factoring in the crowd, environment, soundsystem, time of night, and a hundred other minute factors with the goal of being a conduit for really good music to land. Given this knack for reading a room, it was only a matter of time before we invited him back for a full five hours of Dance Music. From deep and heavy to light and obscure. Much of it Black music, rooted in soul and jazz. Latin-leaning, house and house-adjacent music. Fast and slow, usually old, occasionally new.
