An evening in conversation with author Lauren Martin and Silecta, followed by a night of music with special guest DJ Benny Ill. At the turn of the millennium, on the outer edges of London, a small group of producers stripped jungle, garage and rave for parts, returned to dub and sound system fundamentals, and built something entirely new. They called it dubstep. Within a decade it had shaken the British underground, exploded onto the internet, and transformed electronic music on a global scale. On Friday 16th October, Thieves Like Us brings together three people with deep roots in that world to talk about how it happened, why it mattered, and what came after. Lauren Martin is a music journalist and former Features Editor at DJ Mag. Her debut book Aftershock: The Seismic Impact of Dubstep, published by Velocity Press, is the first definitive oral history of the genre, built from interviews with 28 key figures including Mala, Skream, Loefah, Coki, Kode9 and Horsepower Productions, and told entirely in their own words. Silecta hosts the weekly Eclecticist show on the legendary Rinse FM, plays genre-spanning DJ mixes, and works on a variety of documentary projects exploring the musical heritage of the dub diaspora. Benny Ill of Horsepower Productions is one of the architects of the sound itself. Following the conversation, he takes over the decks for a roots-of-dubstep DJ set featuring music from the moment before it had a name.
