Beauty and loss are inseparable. Melancholia is a collective runway show featuring designers Xanthe Sparkman, Mariana Alaniss, and Soraya Annibali. Through their distinct perspectives, the show explores impermanence, decay, and the complicated beauty of being human. It asks us to consider what happens when we stop resisting change and begin to find meaning in what we cannot keep. In a culture that demands constant movement and productivity, sadness and stillness are often treated as things to overcome. Yet melancholy has long been intertwined with creativity, introspection, and our desire to understand the world. Melancholia challenges the impulse to move on too quickly, inviting us instead to sit with discomfort, embrace uncertainty, and recognize the value of emotions that have no easy resolution. The world of Melancholia exists somewhere between the haunting and the beautiful. Abandoned cemeteries, overgrown gardens, dying flowers, and industrial structures form a landscape where nature slowly reclaims what was once built to contain it. Through this imagery, the show explores the tension between the organic and the manufactured, the fragile and the enduring, the familiar and the unknown. References to spirituality, mythology, artificial intelligence, power, and control further examine our relationship with the forces that shape our lives, both human and beyond our understanding. Through fashion, these ideas take form in the interplay of contrasting textures, materials, and emotions. Each designer offers a different interpretation of the theme, creating a collective narrative that reflects the contradictions inherent in existence: softness alongside strength, beauty alongside destruction, and life alongside death. Set within the Catacombs of Epiphany Center for the Arts, Melancholia invites its audience into a world where endings are not simply something to fear, but an inevitable part of becoming. It is a reflection on the fleeting nature of the things we cherish and the ways loss can alter how we see ourselves, each other, and the world around us. Nothing remains untouched by time. Flowers wilt, structures crumble, and even the things we believe will last forever eventually change. Yet, in that impermanence lies a certain kind of beauty. Sometimes, what falls apart makes room for something new to grow.
