Through our cultural programme at Unmasked, we make space for the stories behind the dancefloor. In September, as part of our Spiral Tribe programme, we screened Free Party: A Folk History and sat down with Joe Rush from Mutoid Waste Company. On Friday 20 November, we’re picking up where we left off with Behind the Sound, a public panel from Unmasked where the people who built the rave scene tell their stories in their own words. Our guest is Steve Bedlam, co-founder of Bedlam Sound System. From early parties in East London to Castlemorton in ’92, Bedlam helped shape the UK free party scene before taking their sound across Europe and to Australia. We’ll talk about what it took to put those parties on, how Steve went on to build systems for Notting Hill Carnival and Glastonbury through Noise Control Audio and how he brought that same DIY approach to Calais, where he co-founded Refugee Community Kitchen. Steph from Dance Culture will host the interview, followed by an audience Q&A and guest DJ sets. There’ll be a bar on the night.
