On September 4, Aby’ss Shanghai celebrates its 5th anniversary — five years of building an independent space for underground electronic music, resident culture and the harder, more experimental edges of club music in China. Since its foundation, Aby’ss has grown alongside a new generation of Shanghai’s underground: connecting international artists with Chinese electronic music, developing its own residents and projects, and creating a meeting point between the local scene and the wider Asian and global club circuit. For its fifth anniversary, the club brings together two distinct forces of international techno with some of the artists who have shaped its identity from within. 6EJOU arrives in Shanghai with his LIVE show. The French artist has built a fiercely physical sound around industrial techno, distortion and raw rave energy, releasing through labels including Hard Vision, Crusade and Insane Industry. His live performances have taken that sound through underground spaces and major dance floors internationally, with recent appearances stretching from Paris and Ibiza to Cocoricò and across the United States. At Aby’ss, 6EJOU performs LIVE — bringing the machinery of his productions directly onto the dance floor. Joining him is Matrixxman, the techno futurist project of Charles Duff. From releases on Ghostly International and Dekmantel to his own The Grid imprint, an extensive catalogue has established Matrixxman as a singular figure in contemporary techno. His trajectory has crossed institutions including Berghain, RSO, fabric and RADION, while his productions move between machine-driven rhythm, acid, Detroit futurism and uncompromising functional techno. The international lineup meets one of the defining figures of Chinese techno: Ma Haiping (MHP). A Shanghai-based producer and one of China’s leading techno artists, Ma Haiping has spent years developing a distinctive collision of Detroit techno and hypnotic science-fiction soundscapes. His work has reached some of the genre’s most respected institutions, including Jeff Mills’ Axis Records, Soma Records and Molecular Recordings, positioning Chinese techno within a genuinely global continuum. But five years of Aby’ss cannot be told through international headliners alone. At its core is the resident community that has built the club from the inside. PRYMARA, DISCIPLINE, LaGlory and Not Your Daddy represent different sides of the Aby’ss sound — artists connected not simply by a lineup, but by years of parties, experiments, collaborations and the continuous evolution of the club’s underground identity. The anniversary brings these worlds together: international techno, China’s own electronic music lineage and the resident culture of Aby’ss under one roof. For five years, Aby’ss has operated as an independent underground club in Shanghai, connecting China’s harder electronic music culture with a wider network across Asia and the international scene.
