Released in 1991, Blue Lines emerged from Bristol’s pioneering Wild Bunch sound-system scene, bringing together hip-hop, dub, reggae, soul, funk and electronic music into something that sounded completely different at the time. The album’s atmospheric production, deep basslines and remarkable vocals from Shara Nelson, Horace Andy and others helped establish the musical foundations that would become associated with the Bristol sound and trip-hop. From the haunting “Safe from Harm” and dreamy “Daydreaming” through to the epic “Unfinished Sympathy”, this is an album that rewards being heard as a complete piece rather than simply as a collection of tracks. Blue Lines has subsequently been recognised as a landmark in British dance and electronic music, with its influence extending across generations of producers and artists.
