“As Above, So Below” Shokatai, a deep techno party organized by UG and age. Since its launch in 2020 amid the unique circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic, the event has pioneered techno music from the perspective of the local underground scene, consistently showcasing the signature sounds of the underground culture present in that era and location, each time featuring different guest artists. Starting at Contact, its birthplace, and moving on to Mitsuki, ENTER, and then VENT, Shokatai has changed venues while engaging with various artists and communities, presenting the atmosphere flowing through the underground at each moment as sound. This year, it celebrates its 6th anniversary. To mark this milestone, Shokatai is bringing Russian artist Toki Fuko to Japan for the first time—a long-awaited artist. Sounds that seem to arrive from beyond a deep fog. Low frequencies crawling deep beneath the earth’s surface; textures that erode space without defined outlines; time that subtly shifts form deep within the repetition. Deep, hypnotic, ambient, dub. Blurring the boundaries between these genres, Toki Fuko’s music slowly draws the listener into its depths. This first-ever Japan performance, marking the label’s 6th anniversary, represents both a milestone for Shokatai and a gateway to new depths. Joining them on stage will be Lisa Mizuno and NYAO. Drawing on a deep journey of self-exploration, Lisa Mizuno views music and dance as a “collective prayer.” Through her event series Resonance, she has connected the Japanese cultural concepts of “ma” (space), “wa” (harmony), and “inori” (pray) to contemporary club culture, crafting experiences that encompass music, space, and the body. With her experimental and fluid DJ sets, she guides the dance floor into a space where senses and consciousness are transformed. NYAO is a DJ and organizer based at TRAFFIC in Nishi-Azabu. While building a robust groove by infusing a sense of speed into solid, massive sounds, they also guide the dance floor into a meditative state through repetitive rhythms. Through their event series axiom and the party collective DtRm, they connect artists and communities while exploring music and the culture that emerges around it. Sounds born from different places and methodologies converge in a single space. Through repetitive rhythms, swaying textures, and low frequencies that sink deep into the body, the boundaries of time, space, and consciousness slowly dissolve. Each an unique psychedelia on the dance floor, transforming into a single, unpredictable vibration. UG and age, residents at Shokatai, carry on this flow, weaving the entire night into a single, profound moment. For six years, Shokatai has continued, intertwining with various places, people, and sounds. What has remained at its core is neither louder sound nor stronger stimulation. It is the exploration of those moments when, within repetitive rhythms, the senses are sharpened, the boundary between body and sound blurs, and we connect to a state of consciousness different from the ordinary. “As Above, So Below.” What is above is also below. What is outside is also inside. Sound melts into space, space melts into the body, and the body becomes part of the night. The outlines of time slowly dissolve, and something that had lain dormant in the depths of consciousness quietly emerges from the darkness. A new depth reached by Shokatai after six years.
