For this edition of Long Play, Ciel explores the influence of dub in expected and unexpected style corners of her record collection. Dub is something that can be heard all over electronic dance music. Characterized by heavy electronic studio effects like deep reverb and echo, stripped-down drum and sub-bass rhythms ("riddims"), and minimal vocals, this style didn't just influence dubstep and jungle. You can hear its fingerprints in house, tech house, tribal, progressive, downtempo, really all over. And what sets these genres apart is less so timbre, and more as it pertains to tempo / rhythm. Ciel will play back two seminal albums under different aliases by Jean Frank Cochois, a German electronic music producer with a diverse body of work active during the turn of the century. These LPs present very different styles of electronic music that have really come to define the cornerstones of Ciel's style as a DJ: tech house and downtempo. We will listen to each and discuss the similarities and differences between them, how rhythm and space (or a lack thereof) play a vital role in each of these styles, which will lay the groundwork for a more philosophical discussion on the amorphous nature of genre tags in contemporary electronic music. As a full-time DJ with a penchant for mixing diverse styles for the last decade, Ciel is fascinated by the deep connections between seemingly disparate genres and seek to find the ways in which sounds are more alike than they are contrary.
