At the heart of the night is J.A.K.A.M., also known as JUZU a.k.a. MOOCHY, a long-standing presence in underground scenes across Japan and beyond. Having recorded with musicians in Cuba and around the world, he releases music through his own label, CROSSPOINT. His work connects traditional instrumentation, indigenous rhythms, voices and field recordings with dub, bass music, house and techno—pursuing a form of dance music that resists easy categorisation. Joining him is Akie, whose background as a record buyer informs selections that move freely across eras, regions and genres. Through this wide-ranging approach, Akie has become an increasingly distinct presence in Tokyo’s underground scene. Also appearing is Sebun, a member of the psychedelic band Tō Yō and a gifted musician and guitarist in his own right. What connects all three is an approach to music rooted not in genre, but in the rhythms and sensations beneath it. Dub, tribal, bass and psychedelia.
