The production is intimate, raw, often hushed and deft but free-wheeling, pummeling, brushing up against but never gratingly in the red. The record sounds timeless and contemporary, AM and FM, a loose grip on the guitar neck and a drumstick on a downward trajectory at maximum velocity. These feel like songs that you’ve heard before, like scanning the radio on a cross-country drive. Not as in a mixtape — there’s a real intentional cohesion across their catalogue — but a freedom to stretch out and explore.
