Long Play: Concept Albums

2026-11-12
19:00:00 - 22:00:00
Rhythm, Toronto

For this edition of Long Play, local head and community leader Burnin' Vernon will lead us on an exploration of two of her favourite concept albums of the 70's: David Bowie's The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars' and Pink Floyd's The Wall. Concept albums are such an incredible way to tell a story or reveal human emotion. Both albums address similar themes of identity, ego, alienation and a society in crisis but from very different viewpoints: Ziggy builds a persona. Pink builds a wall. We'll also explore some musical elements of Ziggy (1972) and The Wall (1979) and how their 7-year age difference impacted instrumentation, production and song structure. Part Music teacher, part techno and house DJ, part podcast host and full-on musicphile, Burnin' Vernon shares a whole different side of herself in this upcoming Long Play. Some of her fondest childhood memories include listening to entire albums with her family and engaging in deep discussions about crazy band lore, cool studio facts or how the music impacted everyone. She has a special fascination with 70's concept albums and how some of them responded to a society in crisis. To create that experience for everyone, we ask that all guests respect a few simple guidelines: Playback begins at 7:35 PM sharp. Please arrive on time and get settled before the music starts. No late entry or ins-and-outs during playback. Doors close at 8 PM, with a 15-minute intermission between albums to stretch, step outside, or catch up with friends. Phones away, please. We ask that you refrain from using your phone during playback to keep distractions to a minimum. Respect the listening experience. Please save conversations for the intermission or after the session. Even quiet conversations can be distracting to those around you. Respect the space and each other. We want everyone to feel comfortable and welcome. Guests who disrupt the experience or disregard these guidelines may be asked to leave.
