There are nights when genres behave, and then there are nights when they start bleeding into each other. Jean d’Armes works somewhere in that spill: house and electro folding into baile funk, cumbia, disco, Middle Eastern rhythms– different languages finding the same pulse. A self-described « soldat sans patrie, combattant sur la piste de danse pour la paix dans le monde » a soldier without a homeland, fighting on the dance floor for world peace. Joining him is Lord Fascinator, the amorphous project of Australian musician Johnny Mackay, comes from a different kind of collision. Indie rock, psychedelia, the strange education of New York dance floors, his sets move between hazy guitars, electronic grooves, and left-field club music. Together, they take us on a ride from start to finish in CARGO, 10PM–3:30AM. In the Foyer, Laura Lynn leans into the ecstatic side of house, disco, and electro: music with a little sweat on it, a little history in it, a sound that knows a dance floor can be both physical and sentimental. Her musical vocabulary stretches from the indie dance and electroclash rooms of early DJing to the strange pleasures of vintage disco. Then there’s Mr. Handyman, whose sets move between rare Brazilian cuts, underground classics, connecting the sounds without putting either into a box.
