On Saturday, October 10, The Basement & Natural Freq enter into friendly cosmic alignment for VENUS, an afternoon into night excursion unfolding beneath the quiet spell of a new moon. Presiding over the musical proceedings are DJ KERRY, TOTTIE, DIMPLES & SURZAE, four selectors arriving from distinctly different coordinates, each carrying their own particular collection of earthly and otherworldly sounds. DJ KERRY enters orbit by way of The Basement LA, the underground gathering she has spent the better part of a decade steering through Los Angeles nightlife, alongside her monthly transmissions on dublab and more recent adventures putting her own Basement Edits onto wax. Her gravitational pull tends toward disco, house, rare groove and left field finds, particularly those capable of moving a room. Orbiting in from London via Barcelona and now Los Angeles is TOTTIE, cofounder of SOS Music and longtime host of Across The Pond on dublab. Having scattered sonic matter across dance floors from Glastonbury and Coachella to Portola and Dekmantel Selectors, she arrives with a suitably interplanetary cargo of erotic house, Italo, left field disco, ambient techno and whatever else has attached itself to the spacecraft en route. DIMPLES, meanwhile, approaches from the deeper historical reaches of the dance floor. An academically trained historian and lifelong devotee of the groove, she traces constellations between jazz, funk, psychedelic disco, house and globally rooted rarities, with Mancuso, Knuckles, Levan, François K., Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy, Joe Claussell, Louie Vega and Theo Parrish among the many stars on her navigational chart. Expect patient trajectories, deep listening and the occasional disappearance of conventional time. Completing our small planetary arrangement is SURZAE, Los Angeles based artist, producer and selector whose universe revolves somewhere between disco, funk, soul, house, Afro house, Balearic and cumbia. Her own productions have lately entered the atmosphere as well, beginning with debut single “Sanctuary,” the natural consequence, it seems, of spending enough time making other people dance that one eventually begins manufacturing the material oneself. And so, for one Saturday, four celestial beings align beneath a moonless Los Angeles sky. We commence at the civilized hour of 4 PM, with daylight still very much in attendance, and continue onward as the sun disappears and the evening loosens its collar. Anticipate good spirits, discerning selections, spontaneous encounters, mild gravitational disturbances and the sort of dance floor behavior generally encouraged when tomorrow is still comfortably far away. Friends, lovers, dancers, wanderers and assorted night folk, come join us. Come early enough to catch the sun. Stay long enough to meet the moon. Welcome to VENUS. We would be delighted to have you
