Since 2009, Moving Silence has been combining contemporary visual aesthetics with a new generation of live music. Moving Silence is a platform for international musicians, artists, and filmmakers dedicated to providing live musical accompaniment for contemporary silent films. Their goal is to bring the poetry of cinema’s early days into the present and to explore the possibilities of today’s silent film. On this evening, two outstanding examples will be shown—and heard. This event is supported by Stiftung WissensArt. Films Lebe schon lange hier D 2015, 57 min, director: Sobo Swobodnik Live music: Marco Brosolo, accompanied by stefanpaul (keyboards, spoken word), Godehard Giese (vocals) For a year, filmmaker Sobo Swobodnik observed everyday neighborhood life from his apartment. The result is a poetic film about Berlin that finds beauty in the seemingly mundane. Black-and-white images of changing billboards and seasons, of shops opening and closing, of hurried passersby, of cyclists and cars, police officers, street workers, tradespeople, and package delivery drivers at work—in short: 12 months in Berlin’s Prenzlauer Berg district. Marco Brosolo provided the music for the film. At this event, a version of the film specially edited by the director and his editor, Manuel Stettner, will be performed live with music composed by Marco Brosolo. Accompanied by stefanpaul on keyboards and featuring spoken word and vocals by Godehard Giese, Brosolo will perform his composition live. Nuntius FI 2014, 60 min, director: Jimi Tenor Live accompaniment: Jimi Tenor and Jori Hulkkonen Nuntius is a film project launched in 2014 by Jori Hulkkonen and Jimi Tenor. The two had previously organized silent film concerts—live music accompaniment to old films. At some point, they had an idea: Why not shoot their own film, designed specifically for such events? After some thought, they decided to make a science fiction film. They traveled around Finland to film unique locations and thus create a science fiction road movie. In Mr. Normall, they found their lead actor. Nuntius is a messenger who delivers a message from one dimension to another. In his home dimension, the soil has been depleted, and a solution must be found. Nuntius is a perpetual work in progress. There is no final, official version of the film; it is continuously expanded with new footage. It has never been released in the conventional sense. The only way to experience the film is to attend a live performance, where Jori Hulkkonen and Jimi Tenor provide the musical accompaniment. Sometimes Mr. Normall himself even appears on stage during the film…
